Where can you legally spend the night in a car or motorhome in Poland?

This is one of the most frequently asked questions I am asked about Poland - and rightly so, because the legal situation doesn't seem entirely clear at first glance. A lot depends on the exact location, common sense and your own travel culture. After all the years I've driven through Poland in my van, I can tell you: In practice it's much more relaxed than many people think. 💛

Law vs. practice - what is the situation in Poland?

In Poland there are es no general legal ban, but the decisive factor is that Where and this LikeDepending on the location, the situation looks completely different:

• State forests (Lasy Państwowe): Outside of specially designated zones - such as the popular program "Zanocuj w lesie" ("Sleep in the forest") - wild camping in the forest is strictly prohibited. But: You can spend a night in the vehicle without any problems in the vast majority of official forest parking lots.
• National parks and nature reserves: A very simple and strict rule applies here: No overnight stay. To protect nature, this is strictly controlled and violations are consistently punished.
• Public streets and parking lots: If there is no explicit sign prohibiting overnight stays or camping and the car is parked properly according to the traffic rules, there are usually no official problems at all.
• Private area: The basic rule obviously applies here - parking and overnight stays only with the express permission of the owner. By the way, it's often worth asking: I've ended up on beautiful farms.

The caravanning code - more important than dry paragraphs

In practice, the unwritten caravanning code is often more crucial for carefree travel than pure legal texts:

• You don't behave like you would at a fully equipped campsite - no extensive outdoor camping life.
• Camping chairs, tables, awnings and grills remain stowed in the vehicle.
• No unnecessary noise that disturbs residents or wildlife.
• Absolutely no rubbish is left behind.
• The next morning you leave early and leave the place as clean as if you had never been there.

And where with toilet and gray water?

If you're free, you still have to dispose of things properly - that's the point at which good campers differ from bad campers. Chemical toilet and gray water are included exclusively to official disposal stations, never into nature or the drain. The good news: There are more of these in Poland than you think - many rest areas (MOPs) on the motorways even have special toilet bus stations free fresh water.
