Campervan, partially integrated, alcove or integrated?

Campervan/panel van: compact, maneuverable, inconspicuous - perfect solo or in pairs and for standing alone. Partially integrated: the happy medium with a real bathroom and kitchen. Alcove: the family mobile home with a bed above the driver's cab and plenty of sleeping places. Integrated: the luxury class with panoramic windows and maximum feeling of space - but expensive. There is no den perfect camper, just the one that suits your life.

Hello, this is Justine from the Tussy Van! 💛 If you're just diving into the wonderful world of caravanning, you'll quickly be overwhelmed with terms like campervan, panel van, alcove or integrated. Suddenly everyone uses these words as a matter of course - but hardly anyone explains to you what exactly is behind them. Don't worry: I'll take a closer look at the four types for you - uncomplicated, practical and honest.

1. Campervan (panel van) - the flexible home on wheels

In a nutshell, a campervan is a classic transporter that has been lovingly transformed into a cozy home on wheels. Models such as Fiat Ducato, Ford Transit or Mercedes Sprinter usually serve as the basis - the living space remains completely within the original vehicle dimensions. (By the way, my blue T4 also belongs to this family, just one size smaller. 😉)

Why campervans are so popular:

• Extremely maneuverable - drives almost like a normal car.
• Fits in standard parking spaces and in narrow inner cities.
• Inconspicuous - a huge advantage if you like to be self-sufficient or "wild".
• Fuel and maintenance costs remain manageable.

The downside: Space is limited. Sometimes it means: either bigger kitchen or more spacious bathroom. But if you love dynamics, spontaneous stopovers and flexible changes of plans, a campervan is worth its weight in gold.

2. Semi-integrated motorhome - the ideal compromise

When people simply talk about a "motorhome" in the camping scene, it's usually a Partially integrated . The original cab is retained and is combined with a wider, custom-built living structure.

• Significantly more freedom of movement and feeling of space than in a campervan.
• Room for a full-fledged one Bathroom and a comfortable kitchen.
• Good insulation - pleasant even in the colder months.
• Still pleasant length and stable driving behavior.

The perfect choice if you want noticeable comfort, but don't want to maneuver a huge "ship" across the campsite.

3. Alcove - the timeless classic for families

You can immediately recognize the alcove by its distinctive "nose" above the driver's cab. There is almost always a permanently installed, spacious double bed in this cozy hump.

• Maximum sleeping places in a compact footprint.
• Room layout perfect for 4 to 6 people.
• No annoying remodeling - the bed upstairs is always ready.

What you should consider: The structure ensures higher air resistance - and therefore more consumption. A little more attention is required in strong winds, in narrow inner cities or on winding mountain roads. If you are traveling with children and value function over design, the alcove is unbeatable.

4. Integrated motorhome - pure luxury on wheels

The premier class. With the integrated, there is no longer a commercial vehicle cab - the entire vehicle is designed from the ground up as an independent motorhome.

• Gigantic feeling of space and maximum use of space.
• Huge panoramic windshield with a fantastic view.
• First-class noise and heat insulation.
• Living comfort at the level of a modern holiday apartment.

The catch: The purchase price, dimensions and maintenance costs are all quite difficult (replacing the huge windscreen alone can be really expensive). Ideal for anyone who spends a lot of time in a motorhome or simply doesn't want to make any compromises.
