Camper technology under control: operation & maintenance for beginners

Water: Only dispose of fresh water with your own drinking water hose, gray water and cassettes only at stations, and empty the system completely when it is frosty. Electricity: 12 V from the body battery, 230 V only from the shore power - and never deeply discharge the battery. Gas: Valve closed during idle time and travel (except with crash sensor), tightness only with Check leak detection spray, have a gas test done. Maintenance: The annual leak test is the most important appointment of all - moisture is the number one value killer. And before every departure: Checklist!
When you own your first camper, many people feel like they're in the cockpit of an airplane: switches, displays, tanks, valves - and the slight fear of breaking something expensive. The good news: The on-board technology follows simple principles, and once you understand it, you can use it at the same time. Believe me โ I've been working on my T4 myself for years, and most of it is just routine. Here I will explain the four major systems and the maintenance that will keep your camper in good shape for many years. ๐
The water system: circuit with three stations
Your camper has three water worlds: the Fresh water tank (typically 80-150 liters), the Gray water tank for dishwashing and shower water and the Toilet cassette for the black water.
The everyday routine is quickly learned: you fill up fresh water at campsites and service stations - only with your own, food-safe hose, because many hands (and sometimes toilet cassettes ๐) have touched the hose before you. You drain gray water via the floor valve at designated stations, never into nature. The cassette is emptied at the chemical disposal facility, rinsed and reapplied with water plus sanitary additive. Two points decide on the water quality: Hygiene โ clean and disinfect the tank at least once per season, do not leave the water standing for weeks in summer โ and Frost protection: As soon as there is a threat of subzero temperatures and the heating is off, the entire system has to be drained, including the boiler and pipes. Many boilers have an automatic frost protection valve that opens automatically when it is cold - so don't be surprised if there is suddenly water under the vehicle in autumn. A burst boiler is one of the most expensive and most common beginner damages.
The electricity system: understanding 12 volts and 230 volts
There are two separate worlds of electricity on board. The 12-volt network is powered by the body battery and supplies the lights, water pump, heating control, USB sockets and the refrigerator while driving. The 230-volt network works only on the campsite's shore power (or via an inverter) and supplies the sockets for hairdryer, kettle or laptop power supply.
The body battery - not to be confused with the engine's starter battery - charges in three ways: while driving via the alternator, on shore power via the charger and, if available, via solar panels. The most important care rule: Avoid deep discharge. If you drain the battery regularly, its lifespan is halved. Keep an eye on the display on the control panel; Modern lithium batteries are significantly more robust and lighter than classic lead-acid or AGM batteries, but cost more.
Practically important: always have shore power Unroll the CEE cable drum completely (heat build-up!) and check how many amps the space column delivers - if you pull the kettle, fan heater and charger at the same time, otherwise you will throw the fuse.
The gas plant: respect yes, fear no
gas is the all-rounder on board: it runs the stove, boiler, heating and usually also the refrigerator. The facility is very safe if maintained correctly - but a few rules are non-negotiable:
- Close the bottle valve when stationary for a longer period of time and generally while driving - unless your system has a crash sensor that officially allows operation while driving (important for the refrigerator on the go, for example).
- Check for leaks after every bottle change - with leak detection spray or soapy water on the connections, never with an open flame!
- Recurring Gas test having it carried out by a specialist company at the prescribed interval - it protects lives.
- Gas and CO warnings install. Carbon monoxide is odorless; a detector costs little and never sleeps.
- Abroad Adapter think: bottle systems and connections differ from country to country, Euro adapter sets are available from specialist camping shops.
Heating and refrigerator: comfort with peculiarities
The Heating runs on gas or diesel depending on the model and distributes warm air through pipes throughout the vehicle. It needs some lead time - and disciplined ventilation in winter, because cooking, showering and breathing generate gallons of moisture that would otherwise condense on cold surfaces and promote mold in the long term.
The Absorption refrigerator is an all-rounder: It runs on 230 V on the pitch, on 12 V while driving and self-sufficiently on gas. Its peculiarity: It only cools properly when the vehicle is fairly level - so drive-on wedges are also refrigerator care. Compressor refrigerators (increasingly standard) are independent of location and are more powerful, but draw battery power.
Maintenance: The annual plan for a long camper life
Yearly:
- Leak test at the specialist dealer - the most important appointment of all. Moisture in the structure is the number one value killer, and annual inspection is often a condition for the manufacturer's leak-tightness guarantee.
- Gas testing at the prescribed intervals, vehicle inspection according to the manufacturer's schedule.
Twice per season:
- Visually inspect the roof, roof hatches, window frames and body seams.
- Clean the rubber seals on doors and flaps and treat them with care products.
- Check tire pressure - campers drive with significantly higher pressure than cars, the correct value is written in the papers or on the door rail. And pay attention to the age of the tires: they are changed after six to eight years, regardless of what the tread looks like.
Before every departure - the checklist:
Gas valve closed, roof hatches and windows locked, awning retracted, TV antenna down, shore power cable unplugged, wedges collected, step retracted, cupboard doors secured, loose luggage stowed away. Sounds banal - but the torn out step and the power cable forgotten on the pitch are absolute classics. ๐
Before winter:
Drain the water system completely, charge the battery (recharge lead-acid batteries regularly), increase the tire pressure or jack up the vehicle, ventilate the interior dry, set up moisture absorbers.
