Guide ยท 5 min. reading time

โฑ๏ธ No time? Here's the short version

Four areas decide: Sleeping (folding mattress or sleeping mat, warm sleeping bag, pillow, thermal mats for blackout), Kitchen (single-burner stove, minimal dishes, 10-15 liter water canister), Electricity & Light (Power bank or power station, headlamp, LED battery lamps - the car battery remains taboo) and Hygiene (first aid kit, wet wipes, toilet paper plus a small shovel, tear-resistant garbage bags). The most important rule: Less is more!

You don't need a motorhome that costs tens of thousands of euros to experience the ultimate feeling of freedom on the road. Your own everyday car, a bit of a sense of adventure and, above all, the right equipment are often enough. If you pack cleverly, you can transform even a compact station wagon or SUV into a cozy base camp. But what is really essential on a road trip - and what just blocks valuable storage space? Here's your packing list for sleeping in the car. ๐Ÿ’›

By the way: We clarify in my guide whether the car is even enough for you or whether it should be a camper. "Car or camper?"And if you're traveling with a real camper, there's here is the big camper packing list.

Important after Camping etiquette: Cook inconspicuously, never leave leftover food that could attract wild animals, and always take your garbage with you. You can find all the unwritten rules in my Camping etiquette โ†’

3. Electricity and light - independence away from sockets

As soon as the engine is off, you should protect the car battery so as not to experience a nasty surprise the next morning. Instead, rely on self-sufficient energy sources:

4. Safety and hygiene - clean and relaxed on the go

When standing wild or on simple parking spaces, there are usually no sanitary facilities. Good preparation protects the environment and ensures well-being:

Conclusion for your adventure: The most important rule when Car camping is: Less is more! Every item that you pack too much, you have to put away from left to right in the narrow interior. Focus on quality and multifunctionality - and enjoy the uncomplicated spontaneity that this type of travel brings with it.
